Dogs and Cats With Jobs

People have had dogs and cats living in their households for centuries. Since earliest times, these animals became affectionate family companions, but dogs have also been hunting partners while cats were appreciated for their abilities to kill the rats that threatened the grain supplies. Today, dogs still accompany hunting parties and cats are still killing rats, but these skills are no longer as critical to our food supplies as they once were. Yet there is little indication that our affections for these animals will likely decline as these initial services become less important. Instead, people have found that cats and dogs can provide many more services to our lives. Here are just a few examples of jobs performed by dogs and cats today:

HERDING, GUARDING LIVESTOCK: Dogs are still trained to attend to livestock. Border collies and sheep dogs were bred for this purpose and many are still working in this capacity on today's farms and ranches.

ANIMALS IN ENTERTAINMENT: Animals are popular movie and television stars; think Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Benji and Garfield, to name a few. Manufacturers use pet stars in front of the camera to promote their pet foods and other pet products in television commercials and magazine advertisements.

TASTE TESTERS: In addition to the marketing department, pet food manufacturers also employ cats and dogs as taste-testers for developing new formulas in their cat food and dog food kitchens.

SHOWS AND COMPETITIONS: Some animal shows seek to award the "best in breed" for well-bred dogs or cats, while other meets are for both cats and dogs to focus on agility through obstacle courses. Whether competing on the basis of beauty or athletics, the winners of these events can win cash awards.

DOGS IN SPORTS: As previously mentioned, dogs are still trained to join in hunting trips; both as members of many conventional hunting excursions as well as the trained hounds in a traditional fox hunt. Many dogs enjoy a game of Frisbee, some for leisure and some in competition. Dogs are also racing athletes, such as greyhound races and dog sled races, including the Iditarod.

SERVICE AND ASSISTANCE DOGS: Most people think a service dog is a "seeing eye dog" but there are many more services that dogs have been trained to perform. In addition to helping to guide blind people, service dogs can also be taught turn on lights, open doors, fetch medication and call 9-1-1. Deaf people can get "hearing dogs" that will notify them of doorbells, ringing telephones and smoke alarms. People susceptible to seizures can get dogs to provide a number of specific services, often including sensing when a seizure is coming and rendering aid beforehand.

POLICE AND MILITARY DOGS: These dogs are highly trained specialists. Among the many job opportunities are sentry, scout and patrol duties; sniffing out drugs, bombs, or other explosives; and searching for casualties. In one recent story, a police dog in training was too fond of people and was not doing well with his lessons in controlling criminals, so he was transferred to Search and Rescue where his unwavering affection for people was more appreciated. Besides their very specialized instruction, these dogs must also learn to remain calm and stay focused in the midst of highly chaotic situations.

THERAPY DOGS: Do you have a companion dog that is mild-mannered, likes people and responds to basic obedience commands? Here is an idea, an opportunity for your pooch to perform a heartwarming bit of community service as a "therapy dog." Therapy dogs visit residents of nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, children's hospitals, even juvenile detention centers. No special training is required for a well-behaved dog to bring a moment of joy, complete with a wagging tail, which transcends the details of these people's current circumstances. If you can spare a few hours, please call a facility near your home and secure an invitation to bring your dog for a visit. The experience will have a huge impact on the residents, and on you.

Dogs and cats can be taught to perform many more services than their original tasks that brought them into our homes, even more than these listed here. They serve us tirelessly without complaint for simple rewards of affection.
